Emrah Yücel

The artist, born in the year 1981 in Bartın, has completed his undergraduate study in Anadolu University, and has earned his Master's Degree in Graphic Design Art Major from Haliç University Institute of Social Sciences. Realizing the errors in perception of calligraphy in his country, the artist has worked with world's leading calligraphy artists and has used these experiences to give seminars and art interviews in universities, private workshops and especially fine arts high schools, in order to change the perception of calligraphy in his country. He has mentioned at every chance that handwriting is not merely made of letters, and that the relationship between form and figure exists in the art of handwriting just as it does in painting; he has been called "Painter of Lettering" owing to this understanding. Being a member of The International Association of Master Penman Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting, he taken part as workshop director in many annual and international events held by the organization. He has a calligraphy diploma from the England-based The Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (CLAS), and has his students receive diplomas from this organization (since there is no academic channel in his country). He still works as the painter of lettering at his own workshop in Balat, one of the historic districts in Istanbul.
